Chinaman | Kinamand
Director: Henrik Ruben Genz
Denmark, China, 2005, 88 min

A true melodrama relating what happens when a 45-year-old Dane, whose wife has left him, accepts an offer from the owner of a Chinese bistro to marry his younger sister when deportation threatens.

The City of the Sun | Sluneční stát
Director: Martin Šulík
Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, 2005, 95 min

The heroes of this ironic social comedy from the wilds of Ostrava are a foursome of friends who, after being laid off, decide to set up a business. However, all kinds of obstacles get in their way, including themselves.

Come into the Light | Alla luce del sole
Director: Roberto Faenza
Italy, 2005, 90 min

Over ten years ago, the Mafia did away with Father Puglisi, who endeavoured in his parish on the outskirts of Palermo to prevent the inevitable transformation of street kids into members of the ‘honourable society’. Director Faenza, returning in his film to the last three years of the priest’s efforts, provides an unobtrusive, arresting look at the life of a fascinating figure.

A Driver for Vera | Voditěl dlja Very
Director: Pavel Chukhrai
Russia, 2004, 114 min

This demythologising look at the Khrushchev era employs a story about a chauffer named Viktor who, under the pressure of circumstances, marries into a general’s family only to become an unintentional witness to its demise. The hypocritical realities of the regime pervade even the level of the heroes’ purely intimate experiences.

Life with My Father | La vie avec mon pčre
Director: Sébastien Rose
Canada, 2005, 110 min

Brothers Paul and Patrick are chalk and cheese, linked only by their surname and by the father whose name they adopted. When the aging man returns home with an empty bank account and a worsening state of health, all three are forced to coexist in the crumbling family house.

The Lost Domain | Le domaine perdu
Director: Raoul Ruiz
France, Romania, Spain, Italy, 2004, 106 min

Using the story of two men of differing world views who are connected by their love of flying, director Raoul Ruiz uses several time planes to portray certain historical reversals of the last half century. As one of Salvador Allende’s supporters, the filmmaker left his native Chile in 1973 after the military coup and settled in France. There he shot dozens of films, some of which were screened in competition at prestigious festivals including Cannes, Venice and Berlin.

My Nikifor | Mój Nikifor
Director: Krzysztof Krauze
Poland, 2004, 100 min

A film about an odd friendship between an academic painter named Marian Wlosiński and the physically disabled and illiterate naive painter Epifan Dworniak, known to the world as Nikifor Krynicki. The charm of his work and even the way he perceives reality influenced the film’s narrative style.

Noriko´s Dinner Table | Noriko no Shokutaku
Director: Sion Sono
Japan, 2005, 158 min

A family portrait and contemporary psychothriller about the rebellion of otherwise obedient daughters under the influence of a suicide circle. Since Nagisa Oshima started making movies, it seems that a strong generational conflict slumbers under the surface of Japanese society, a conflict which is the prime mover behind a film by a controversial director, a virtuoso manipulator of viewer emotions reminiscent of Lars von Trier.

Portrait of a Lady Faraway | Sima-ye zani dar doordast
Director: Ali Mosaffa
Iran, 2005, 98 min

This intimate psychological drama by a debuting director, which touches on the themes of memory and loneliness, is reminiscent of the work of Andrei Tarkovsky for its mysterious, disturbing atmosphere.

The Queen of Sheba´s Pearls | The Queen of Sheba´s Pearls
Director: Colin Nutley
Sweden, United Kingdom, 2004, 123 min

England, 1944. On Jack Bradley’s eighth birthday he loses his mother Emily. Eight years later, on the same February day, Jack celebrates his sixteenth birthday, and a young woman, a Swede named Nancy Ackermann, who looks surprisingly like the deceased Emily, knocks at his grandmother’s door....

Tuning | Tuning

Director: Igor Šterk
Slovenia, 2005, 71 min

At first glance, Katarina and Peter have a happy marriage. But their relationship, after years of living together, is stuck in the shallows of boredom and stereotypes. So they look carefully around them, each of them hoping for a new chance. But the couple can’t live contentedly with or without each other....

The Unburied Man | A temetetlen halott
Director: Márta Mészáros
Hungary, Poland, Slovak Republic, 2004, 127 min

A cinematic statement on the end of the life of Communist Premier Imre Nagy, who tried to institute democracy in 1956 during the Hungarian Uprising. He was executed and his name long became taboo. This reconstruction of his attitudes and life draws on a memoir written by his daughter Erzsébet.

Unveiled | Fremde Haut
Director: Angelina Maccarone
Germany, Austria, 2005, 97 min

Iranian refugee Fariba is forced in Germany to dress as a man and assume a male identity. In disguise, she then takes on an illegal job in a factory where she meets the young labourer Anna. A strong bond grows between them, whose consequences are inevitable: the female immigrant is ultimately forced to reveal her true identity....

What a Wonderful Place | Eize makom nifla
Director: Eyal Halfon
Israel, 2005, 104 min

Three stories. While in Israel, Ukrainian call girl Jana gets together with a former policeman named Franco who now works for a gangster boss. Farmer Zeltzer is looking in vain for Jana; he’s found a bag of hers containing photographs of her loved ones. Zeltzer’s Thai workers are officer Eloni’s prime target of persecution when he’s not looking after his disabled father.
